Keeping the Spirit Alive

The 1970s may have been a long time ago, but we are hardy, resilient and determined people and we will keep the spirit of that glorious age alive.

Whether it be tribute acts, fan clubs, dedicated radio shows or whatever, we remain surrounded by constant reminders of a world as it was, in all its simplicity and colour.

On this page we celebrate some of those people, and the events which keep us believing…

Glenn Stark (centre), pictured here with Ray Stiles and Rob Davis from Mud.

Glenn was once a roadie for Slade, and he met his wife Gwen whilst they were both pursuing their mutual interest in enjoying all things Slade.

Glenn and Gwen live in Norfolk, a haven for glam fans with some great live acts such as Glam X.

Stewart Griffin (pictured with me) hosts the excellent Cockney Rebel Connections radio show.

Episodes and highlights from Stewart’s show have been regularly acknowledged and shared through the late Steve Harley’s own official website, which have included interviews with the star.

He proudly sends out his broadcasts from his purpose-built man-shed and is an avid supporter of Bury Football Club.

Tim Daines (also pictured with me) presents The Slade Show on AlmeriaRadio.Live, an English-language radio show operating out of the sunshine resort in Southern Spain.

The Slade Show airs on Monday nights and is a unique interactive event, usually with a fresh theme each time. Slade enthusiasts can feed in requests and chat with each other in the background.

The programme supports the Slade Monument Project in Wolverhampton, frequently hosting updates and charity draws.

The Pouk Hill Prophetz are a three-man glam band who play hits by 1970s legends like Slade, The Sweet, T. Rex and Status Quo, as well as recording their own material such as their recent limited edition number “Spiritual Home”.

The group’s name comes from the title of an early song by Slade, and at a recent gig at the Water Rats in London’s King’s Cross they were joined on stage by Slade legend Don Powell, who played drums on a couple of numbers to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Glam X are a hugely talented father-and-son outfit from Norfolk, who regularly tour the circuit around the Great Yarmouth area, providing entertainment among the county’s ample selection of pubs and clubs.

Although majoring on the traditional glam classics, they are not afraid to dabble with the slightly more obscure (they perform a superb rendition of “Sylvia” by Focus) and have several Bowie numbers on their playlist.

And as we rightly celebrate those who keep the spirit of the 1970s alive, we should not forget those we have sadly lost along the way.

Not least among these was the superb guitarist Mick Ronson who performed with Bowie during the early seventies and went on to play, arrange and produce music for such notables as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Mott the Hoople, John Mellencamp and Lulu.

I paid tribute at his Garden of Reflection during a recent visit to his native Hull.
